In 2007, Connecticut passed historic legislation that banned aesthetic pesticides on K-8 school grounds. This commonsense legislation was implemented in 2010 and now protects our children from unnecessary exposure to toxic pesticides where they play the most - at school. Unfortunately, legislation has been introduced that would repeal the pesticide ban. This ill-conceived legislation has passed out of committee and may be voted on by the full Connecticut General Assembly soon. We need your help to stop this attack on our children's health!
The growing body of peer-reviewed scientific evidence indicates that pesticide exposure can adversely affect a child's neurological, respiratory, immune, and endocrine systems, even at low levels. Long-term exposure to pesticides has also been linked to cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Fortunately, schools can eliminate their use of hazardous pesticides while successfully and cost-effectively managing pest problems on school grounds.
The archaic practice of poisoning our children at school must not be allowed to continue!
How you can help:
Email your CT state senator and CT House representative. Tell them to vote NO on HB. 5155, which would repeal the K-8 school ground pesticide ban.
Email tips:
- Include your name and address in your email.
- Tell your representatives that you support a ban on pesticides at Connecticut schools, and you urge them to protect children's health by opposing any attempts to repeal the ban.
- Tell your representatives to vote NO on HB 5155!
- Ask for a response in writing, letting you know how they will address your concerns.
