Plastic bags clog storm drains, litter our parks and beaches, devastate wildlife, and waste valuable natural resources. Today, there is a growing movement of municipalities all over the world that are taking steps to reduce plastic bag pollution and incentivize environmentally friendly reusable bags instead. The Town of Darien now has an opportunity to be a leader in environmental protection by joining communities across the globe in banning disposable plastic bags.
In 2008, Westport, CT became the first municipality on the East Coast to pass a plastic bag ban ordinance, which resulted in a 70% increase in reusable bag use in the first year after implementation. Reusable bags are simple, sustainable, and cost effective. Each reusable bag can prevent up to 1,000 plastic bags from entering our environment.
Darien must join this global movement to ban plastic bags!
