On October 16, the Rockland County Legislature will be voting on two important resolutions regarding United Water's proposed desalination project. Both resolutions send a strong message to New York State that the desalination proposal is flawed, unnecessary, and detrimental to both our environment and Rockland ratepayers. Hudson River desalination would be costly and energy intensive, irreparably damage Haverstraw Bay, and counter efforts by Rockland County to conserve and protect our fresh water supply.
The two resolutions being voted on:
Resolution to Reopen the PSC Case: This resolution will urge the Public Service Commission (PSC) to reconsider its decision that Rockland needs more water and that United Water's desalination plan would be the best way to solve to Rockland's water needs. New evidence shows Rockland water is more plentiful and healthy than initially believed, and conservation measures would be better for the county's environment and economy.
Resolution to Request an Issues Conference: This resolution will urge the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to allow Rockland an Issues Conference, where experts and the public can state why desalination is a bad idea here, and to contest United Water's claims that it is the best option for Rockland. At the only other DEC hearing to date, so many people showed up to testify against desalination that many residents were not only unable to speak but were unable to even get inside the building. Rockland residents deserve to have their issues with desalination heard before any decision is made.
