Suffolk
County "No Spray List" Resolution
CCE believes that
individuals should have the right to decide whether or not they or their
property is sprayed with toxic pesticides. People have the ability to
decide for themselves whether they want to be sprayed by the County or
if they would rather take their own precautions.
Suffolk County Legislator,
Jon Cooper, and others introduced a local ordinance that formally creates
a No Spray List Program. Under this plan, individuals who don't want to
be sprayed can register themselves on a "no-spray list". Individuals
on the list would avoid spraying in all cases except under a "public
health emergency". Passage of this legislation would not prevent
the county from spraying – it would only give individuals the right
to say for themselves whether or not they wanted their homes and families
to be sprayed.
On
Tuesday, June 5, 2001, the Suffolk County Legislature voted 15-3 to adopt
the CCE-proposed "No-spray list" resolution (#1292-2001). County
Executive Robert Gaffney signed the bill into law on June 21, 2001 to
become the first-of-its-kind law in New York State. The law took effect
August 19, 2001.
