Tips
to Eliminate Mosquitoes Around Your Home
Personal
Protection Measures are the Best Protection Against WNV
CCE and many
others including health agencies, have consistently recommended that the
best way to reduce possible exposure to WNV is through personal protective
measures, such as wearing long sleeved shirts, keeping mosquitoes out
of homes by using screens, reducing standing water around homes and using
non-toxic bug repellents, primarily in July and August.
The following are
a few simple, but important ways you can eliminate mosquitoes around your
home:
- Get rid
of water-holding containers, especially old tires, cans, buckets, drums,
wheelbarrows and bottles
- Cover
trash containers to keep out rain
- Drill
holes in the bottoms of recycling containers
- Clean
roof gutters and remove water from flat roofs
- Drain
the water in birdbaths, plant pots and drip trays twice a week
- Sweep
your driveway after it rains so that it is free of puddles
Remember:
Taking personal responsibility for your property and carefully following
these tips can help you and your family enjoy a more mosquito-free season!
