COALITIONS & AFFILIATIONS

Synergy and results have been the products of many years of effective partnerships with other groups, organizations and concerned citizens. The following is a list of some important coalitions CCE is actively working with and some committees and councils with which CCE is affiliated in advancing our common environmental agendas.

Adirondack Council - An 18,000 member, privately funded, not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the natural and human communities of the Adirondack Park through research, education, advocacy and legal action. www.adirondackcouncil.org

Agriculture Environment Management Steering (AEM) Committee - A voluntary, incentive based program helping farmers meet business objectives and protect our state's water supplies. www.agmkt.state.ny.us/SoilWater/AEM/AEM.html

Alaska Coalition - A coalition of over 500 conservation, sporting, and religious groups working together to protect Alaska's public lands. www.alaskacoalition.org

Alliance for Clean Energy New York - The Alliance for Clean Energy New York is a group of organizations which share the goal of bringing clean energy technologies to New York. This alliance includes non-profit environmental, public health and consumer advocacy organizations, educational institutions, and private companies that produce or sell renewable energy technologies or energy efficiency services. Together these organizations have produced the www.aceny.org web page to serve as a resource for New Yorkers interested in promoting the clean energy technologies that will provide cleaner air and a more diverse and secure electricity future.

The Alliance for Informed Mosquito Management (AIMM) - A national group of organizations seeking to protect the public and the environment from unnecessary exposure to hazardous pesticides used in the attempt to control mosquito-borne diseases.

Brookhaven National Laboratory Citizens Advisory Committee (BNL CAC) – comprised of over 20 civic, business, education, labor, public health and environmental organizations. The purpose of the committee is to ensure that ideas, interests and concerns of BNL communities are considered by the laboratory in its decision making process. The CAC’s mission is to address concerns about BNL’s policies and operations, explicitly those related to environment and public health issues.

Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) and Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for Suffolk County Vector Control & Wetlands Management Long Term Plan and Environmental Impact Statement - The Suffolk County Department of Health is conducting an extensive review of mosquito control practices in Suffolk County. This review includes the applications of pesticides and the ditching of wetlands. CCE is a member of both committees to ensure that environmental and public health concerns are given the highest priority in this process. Clean Air NY - A network of individuals, employers, employees, and community organizations in the New York metro area committed to the idea that every person can help clean our air. Clean Air NY is sponsored by the New York State Department of Transportation in support of regionwide air-quality efforts.

The Clean Water Network - An alliance of more than 1000 organizations that endorse the platform paper "National Agenda for Clean Water", which outlines the need for strong clean water safeguards to protect human health and the environment.

Erie County Environmental Management Council (ECEMC) - The ECEMC is an advisory board to the Erie County Legislature and County Executive on environmental issues, provides a liaison between local and county government, and provides public education on various environmental issues in Erie County. CCE serves as an At-Large member of the ECEMC.

Erie County Water Quality Committee - This committee coordinates various water quality projects throughout Erie County.

Great Lakes United - An international coalition of member organizations dedicated to preserving the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River ecosystem by developing and promoting effective policy initiatives, carrying out education programs and promoting citizen action and grassroots leadership. www.glu.org

Healing Our Waters Great Lakes Coalition - Established in 2005, the coalition’s goal is to restore and protect the Great Lakes. Led by the National Wildlife Federation and the National Parks Conservation Association, the coalition represents millions of residents in the Great Lakes region.

Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives - The largest peace organization on Long Island, consisting of 22 organizations and 1000 members, serving as a resource for information on peace, justice, disarmament and U.S. foreign policy since 1985.

Long Island Sound Study Citizen Advisory Committee - A committee that includes representatives of citizen and user groups interested in Long Island Sound. Its role is to communicate citizen concerns about the Sound and the Study to the Management Committee, provide advice on public education activities and build a constituency to support the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.

New York Old Growth Forest Association – A group charged with locating, documenting, and protecting our ancient forests. The NYOGFA coordinates volunteer teams in different regions across New York who search for, discover and document old growth. www.championtrees.org/NYOGFA

New York State Association of Environmental Management Councils (NYSAEMC) - an organization that works to advocate sound environmental management in New York State; assist and enhance the work of county EMC’s; coordinate information and present opportunities for EMC's to learn from each other; promote the formation of new councils; and network with federal, state, and local governments and agencies. CCE serves on the NYSAEMC Board of Directors.

Northern Forest Alliance - A coalition of conservation, recreation and forestry organizations united in their commitment to protect the 26 million-acre Northern Forest of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. www.northernforestalliance.org

NY Farms! - This program supports the Buy NY! Campaign and promotes Pride of NY regional brands. The program also works to connect schools and consumers with their local farms to promote involvement with local farms and farmers, farmers markets, and Community Supported Agriculture programs. www.nyfarms.info

Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) -a public benefit corporation, established in 1990 and charged with the solid waste management of 33 of the 35 municipalities in Onondaga County. Created by the New York State Legislature, OCRRA is an independent agency not funded through local taxes. www.ocrra.org

Partnership to Reduce Mercury in Schools - Since 2003, CCE has been a part of The Partnership to Reduce Mercury in Schools, a program of New York State Department of

People’s Environmental Network of New York (pENNY) - Based in central New York State, pENNY is dedicated to promoting and preserving a clean and healthy environment for all by supporting existing organizations, facilitating interactions between them, and sharing common environmental and community health goals.

South Shore Estuary Citizen Advisory Committee - A committee working to advance the South Shore Estuary Reserve's Comprehensive Management Plan through extensive public education and increased public participation and input in the Reserve Council's planning process. www.estuary.cog.ny.us

Suffolk County Pesticide Phase Out Community Advisory Committee (CAC) - Established to implement a phase out plan for pesticide use on Suffolk County properties, the CAC is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of Local Law No. 34-1999 by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. The committee consists of nine appointed members and other non-appointed members. The committee meets once a month and meetings are open to the community. The committee is involved in such tasks as seeking alternative solutions to pesticide use, reviewing emergency waivers and exemptions from the law, conducting research projects and collaborating an inventory of pesticides for the County. Suffolk County Vector Control Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) - A committee established to provide input by community and environmental groups to Suffolk County officials in the development of the Suffolk County Long Term Vector Control Plan. The CAC evaluates the county's mosquito control practices such as the use of pesticides and wetlands management practices. There are currently over 20 diverse groups represented on the committee.

Westchester County Global Warming Task Force - Formed in 2006 by County Executive Andrew Spano to measure and reduce contributions to global warming made by the governments, residents, and businesses of Westchester County.

Westchester County Soil & Water Conservation District - A special-purpose district created to develop and carry out a program of soil, water and related natural resources conservation. CCE is an associate director to the board.

Wind Action Group – The Wind Action Group was formed to develop information that will allow thoughtful, informed decisions on the future of wind power in the WNY region, and maintains a colorful and informative website.

Wind Power Education Project (WPEP) - Formed in 2006, WPEP is a collaborative effort of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Pace Law School Energy Project, and New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG). The group educates the public on the facts and environmental benefits of wind power. The project’s goal is to dispel myths that have perpetuated about wind power and empower citizens to take an active role in the siting process.

WindWorks Long Island – This coalition is a broad partnership of local, regional, and national environmental, civic, health, business and faith-based groups working to bring the nation's first offshore wind park to Long Island.

WNY Earth Day Steering Committee – This committee works year round to inform and inspire the community to protect and enhance our environment. Project includes an annual earth day expo at the Buffalo Zoo.
