Students Challenge Oprah to Join Fight on Global
Warming.
“Mr. Luna’s
Bright Idea” empowers students to take action
on global warming and seeks out “star power”.
North
Babylon, NY--Over 200 students will gather
with posters, hand-made signs, and banners that
have one message, "Help us Oprah". The
students, under the leadership of their science
teacher, Mr. Kenny Luna, are part of the initiative
"Mr. Luna's Bright Idea". Mr.
Luna's Bright Idea aims to fight
global warming one light bulb at a time, with
the goal of getting every student in America a
compact florescent light bulb (CFL). CFL's on
average use 75% less energy than normal light
bulbs. If every student in America changed
one bulb to a CFL bulb it would add up to savings
of $2.3 billion!
Mr. Kenny Luna came up with the idea after watching
an Oprah show on global warming and listening
to his favorite song "Stand Up" by Dave
Matthews Band. "We must all "stand up"
and do something about global warming," stated
Mr. Kenny Luna, 8th grade Science Teacher, Robert
Moses Middle School, "It's about our children's
future. They are the one's who will bear the brunt
of global warming."
"Global Warming will affect this generation
of children. Children need to understand their
actions can protect the earth and their inaction
will harm the earth," stated Maureen Dolan
Murphy, Program Coordinator, Citizens Campaign
for the Environment, "North Babylon School
District, through Kenny Luna's leadership, has
empowered their students to take action. This
is the right message our schools need to be sending
to our students."
"On behalf of Deer Park Home Depot, it is
our pleasure to donate 5,500 CFL bulbs to the
youth of America. It is our experience that with
helping children, in the future is always brighter.
No pun intended!" stated George Wiley, General
Manger of the Deer Park Home Depot.
The students have been actively involved in raising
money to buy every student in North Babylon a
CFL. Home Depot's surprise announcement is a testimony
to the students' dedication to this initiative.
"Home Depot is "Standing Up"
in North Babylon. Now, we need Oprah to "Stand
Up" with us. Let's make this dream a reality
and give every child in America one CFL bulb to
fight global warming!" concluded Luna.
