CURRENT LOCAL AIR QUALITY

Healthy air is essential for all breathing beings. CCE actively works to improve air quality for Connecticut, New York, and the Nation. Influenced by pollutants including power plant emissions and diesel soot, air quality is a reflection of fine particulate matter in the air. High levels of particulate matter can negatively affect a person’s ability to breathe properly. Poor air quality is particularly challenging for sensitive populations such as children, asthmatics, and the elderly. To find out your local current and forecasted air quality, click the star on the map closest to your area or select a location from the dropdown box.

On days that air quality is orange, red, purple, or magenta in your area, the Department of Transportation requests you to make special efforts to reduce air pollution such as driving less. Help improve air quality by carpooling, taking public transportation, riding your bike, or walking to work or running errands. Additionally, turning of the lights, refraining from using appliances, and adopting other energy efficiency measures can reduce electricity demand and help fight air pollution. Check out CCE’s Energy Conservation guide here.

The Clean Air Act requires the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set primary and secondary standards for National Ambient Air Quality. Click here for more information on the National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
