In October 2010 CCE released a report entitled, "Suffolk County Fertilizer Survey: Analyzing Store Compliance of Suffolk County Local Law 21-2007." The report documents stores in and out of compliance with a 2007 Suffolk County law to reduce nitrogen. The law states that homeowners cannot apply fertilizers to their property between November 1 and April 1. The law also states that stores selling fertilizers must post educational signs and provide free educational brochures to customers. CCE surveyed 30 stores to assess their compliance. The results found that:
- 53%, or 16 of the stores, were in full compliance, meaning they had both the signs and the brochures displayed.
- 10%, or 3 stores, were partially in compliance, that is they had either the brochures or the signs displayed
- 37%, or 11 stores, were not in compliance, meaning they had neither the sign nor the brochures.
