In September of 2009, the NYS Legislature passed legislation that establishes a State Energy Planning Board, and requires this Board to complete a State Energy Plan by March of 2013. The State Energy Plan is intended to focus on reliably meeting projected future energy demands, while balancing economic development, climate change, environmental quality, health, safety and welfare, transportation, and consumer energy cost objectives. The process of developing the State Energy Plan will include opportunities for public input. CCE will weigh in throughout the process and work to ensure that the State Energy Plan maximizes energy efficiency; increases investments in renewable energy such as large scale solar and wind; plans for no more new coal or nuclear power plants in NYS; and encourages energy production in proximity to demand.
The process to develop the 2013 State Energy Plan comes on the heels of the completion of the 2009 NYS Energy Plan. CCE and our members weighed in heavily during the process, with 25,000 members of the public signing petitions, and 10,800 writing hand-written letters in support of clean, renewable energy and energy conservation.
