Don't Let the EPA Prop Up the Dirty Coal Industry

Reject the EPA's proposed rule that fails to protect clean air and fight climate change

Take Action Now

Coal-fired power plants emit mercury, which makes fish unsafe to eat; sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which cause acid rain; and greenhouse gases, which contribute to the climate crisis. The EPA has the authority and responsibility to set and enforce limits on dangerous emissions from fossil fuel power plants, but, regrettably, they have proposed a rule that puts public health in danger and disregards the threat of climate change.

Back in 2015, the EPA finalized the Clean Power Plan (CPP), which represented the biggest step this nation had taken to address the threat of climate change. The CPP would have slashed carbon emissions from U.S. power plants 32% by 2030, delivering $34 billion-$54 billion in health and climate benefits and avoiding 3,600 premature deaths and 90,000 asthma attacks every year. Regrettably, the EPA recently proposed a dangerous replacement to the CPP, known as the Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) Rule.

The ACE Rule is significantly less protective of public health and the environment than the CPP. The ACE Rule fails to establish any emission reduction targets but, rather, allows states to determine how much to cut emissions at individual plants (if at all). This shortsighted and dangerous rule would prop up dirty, outdated coal plants at the expense of our health and environment.

By EPA's own analysis, the ACE Rule would:

Result in 470-1,400 more premature deaths annually by 2030.
Cause 48,000 new cases of exacerbated asthma.
Set back efforts to address the climate crisis by failing to establish emission reduction targets for power plants.
Cost Americans billions of dollars annually in combined climate change and health costs.

The EPA is currently accepting public comments on the proposed ACE Rule. Submit an online comment today. Copy and personalize the sample text below to tell the EPA that you oppose this dirty and dangerous proposal.

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the EPA's proposed Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) Rule, which fails to protect clean air and fight climate change. I urge you to rescind the proposed ACE Rule and instead implement EPA's 2015 Clean Power Plan as soon as possible.

The proposed ACE Rule fails to protect public health and the environment by not establishing any emission reduction targets and allowing states to determine how much to cut emissions at individual power plants, if at all. This shortsighted and dangerous rule puts polluter profits above Americans' health by providing a lifeline to the dirty coal industry, setting back efforts to address the climate crisis and unnecessarily exposing Americans to injurious air pollutants. The ACE rule would result in 1,400 more premature deaths, cause 48,000 new cases of exacerbated asthma, and cost Americans billions of dollars annually in combined climate change and health costs.

By contrast, the EPA's 2015 Clean Power Plan would rein in power plant pollution, speed America's transition away from fossil fuels, protect our health, and prevent future generations from experiencing the worst effects of climate change. The CPP would slash carbon emissions 32% by 2030, delivering $34 billion-$54 billion in health and climate benefits and avoiding 3,600 premature deaths and 90,000 asthma attacks every year.

I urge the EPA to rescind the proposed ACE Rule and work to implement the 2015 Clean Power Plan as soon as possible. Thank you for your consideration.
