Letter to the editor: There’s no denying wind is a viable energy source

A recent Another Voice authored by an anti-wind power proponent presented a myopic point of view with unfounded claims that do nothing but spread misinformation and do the public a disservice. The fact is that wind is a viable energy source, and can and will play an important role in our nation’s energy future. The U. S. Department of Energy estimates that wind can safely provide 20 percent of our nation’s energy needs by 2030.

I do not claim that wind is the single “silver bullet” solution to our current energy crisis, but rather an important piece of the puzzle that also includes energy conservation and efficiency, as well as other renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro and geothermal energy. Every time more wind power enters the electric grid, we avert the need to use additional fossil fuels that pollute our environment and devastate consumers with volatile price spikes.

Western New York is blessed with abundant wind resources that we can continue to harness to produce clean, domestic energy. Wind will play a significant role in combating global warming and revitalizing our economy by creating good jobs.
