Storm runoff can seriously pollute Manhasset Bay, the backdrop of Port Washington. But a new North Hempstead program, "Recycle the Rain," enables residents to preserve the peninsula's natural resources.

The barrels collect the rain from roof gutters, and can then be used to water our gardens. Local environmentalists give the program high marks. Frank Morris of the NY Sierra Club noted that rain barrels would help residents "save money on their water bill."

And Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment in Farmingdale, pointed out that rain barrels "encourage residents to become stewards of the environment."

Residents can purchase a 50-gallon barrel through the town for $50. Similarly sized barrels elsewhere can cost twice as much.

Have you purchased a barrel? Do you plan too (sic)? Why or why not?
