Picking up litter last weekend for the Earth Day litter cleanup, I found lots of garbage, but no returnable beverage containers. I collected my fair share of plastic water bottles and non-deposit containers from our city streets - only confirming OCRRA's study that finds 80 percent of bottles with a deposit actually get recycled.

For years, the public has overwhelmingly supported expanding the bottle bill to include containers that were left out of the original 1982 law. The industry complained about the bottle bill more than 25 years ago, and their dire predictions did not come true. In fact, the beverage industry has flourished.

Including the 5-cent deposit on beverage containers designed to be consumed "on the go" is a powerful, effective and necessary tool to ensure recycling and prevent litter. We applaud the governor, Assembly, and state Senate for getting the job done.
