HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) — Long Island's Suffolk County has become the third county in New York to ban microbeads in personal care products. County Executive Steve Bellone signed the legislation on Monday. It'll go in effect January 2018.

The beads are so small they show up in the bodies of fish and other wildlife after passing through water filtration systems without disintegrating

According to Newsday, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Adrienne Esposito says as more states ban the beads it will put pressure on New York state lawmakers to enact a statewide law.

Connecticut and California already have such bans; a similar law failed to pass in Albany this year.

New York's Erie and Chautauqua counties also have passed a ban on the beads.
