SAVE OUR LOBSTERMEN! DON'T PUNISH THE VICTIM, ADDRESS THE PROBLEM

Groups Join with Lobstermen to call on Congress to protect Long Island Sound and Lobster Industry

Guilford, CT— Members of the CT Commercial Lobstermen Association, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, and elected leaders are calling on Congress, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to address the underlying causes of the Long Island Sound (LIS) lobster die-off and to stop imposing harsh and unnecessary restrictions on Connecticut’s commercial lobster industry.
Poor water quality has left the LIS lobster fishery in a state of decline. In response, the federal government has continued to place new restrictions on CT’s commercial lobstermen, crippling this once flourishing industry. Concurrently, the federal government has continued to cut funding for wastewater treatment infrastructure and Long Island Sound Restoration. Federal leaders are turning a blind eye to the larger water quality problems in the Sound, causing a major economic and environmental crisis for the Long Island Sound community.
Speakers include:

  • Nick Crismale, President, CT Commercial Lobstermen Association
  • Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director, Citizens Campaign for the Environment
  • Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro
  • State Senator Edward Meyer
  • State Rep. Patricia Widlitz
  • State Rep. Lonnie Reed
  • State Rep. Alyssa Wright
