HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON FIRST VILLAGE IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY TO BAN STYROFOAM™; TAKES ADDITIONAL STEP AND BANS PLASTIC BAGS

Hastings-on-Hudson, NY - Hastings-on-Hudson has become the latest Westchester municipality to ban disposable plastic and paper bags at check-out counters, and the first municipality in the county to ban Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam, commonly referred to as StyrofoamTM. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the local law, which would encourage reusable bag use among residents and reduce litter from EPS foam and disposable bags in local roads, parks, and waterways.

In response to the law’s passage, Jordan Christensen, Hudson Valley Program Coordinator for Citizens Campaign for the Environment said:

“Hastings on the Hudson has made a bold, important step in reducing pollution and protecting waterways. By banning unnecessary disposable bags and EPS foam the village is the forefront of the going green. These throw-a-way bags and polluting containers are used for a few minutes, but remain in our environment for hundreds of years. They clog storm drains, litter our parks and communities, and endanger wildlife. Encouraging reusable bags and sustainable carry-out containers is a model that other communities should embrace. Communities around the globe have already shown that making the switch to reusable bags and containers is economical, practical, and has not hindered the ability to get groceries home.

CCE commends Mayor Swiderski and the Board of Trustees for taking this important, critical step in protecting our environment. Hastings-on-Hudson joins the City of Rye and Villages of Larchmont and Mamaroneck in switching to reusable bags, and is the newest leader in the county-wide movement to go green.”
