CCE LAUDS GOVERNOR'S HISTORIC DECISION TO SAY "NO" TO FRACKING IN NEW YORK!

Decision marks landmark victory for people, environment, and economy of NY Cuomo arises as national leader after taking bold stance against dirty drilling

Albany, NY– Today Governor Cuomo announced that he would not allow hazardous gas development in New York State, known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking. New York has been debating whether or not to allow high volume hydraulic fracturing into areas like the Marcellus Shale formation since 2008. With today’s announcement, Governor Cuomo has become the first Governor in the nation to take decisive action to prohibit the inherently dirty and dangerous process of fracking. After today’s announcement, Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director for Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE), released the following statement:

“With today’s decision, New Yorkers have received the greatest holiday gift we could ask for—clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. Unlike the toy that will break in a week, this gift will be felt for generations to come.

We are profoundly thankful to Governor Cuomo for taking decisive action to protect New York from the inherently dangerous process of fracking. Governor Cuomo repeatedly stated that he would follow the science when making a decision on fracking, and today he has been proven a man of his word by making a conclusive decision based on scientific facts and clear evidence. Governor Cuomo chose public need over corporate greed. He chose to protect public health, clean water, and clean air over short-term corporate profits. Governor Cuomo clearly made the right decision today, and we commend him for it.

Other states that have rushed ahead with fracking have suffered from contaminated drinking water, degraded public health, polluted air, and boom and bust economies. The prospect of fracking in New York has represented the biggest threat to New York’s environment in many decades. Governor Cuomo has boldly become a national leader in protecting public health and the environment by saying “NO” to fracking in New York, and paving the way for other states to follow suit.”
