ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS PUSH DEC TO REQUIRE CRITICAL UPGRADES TO NORTHPORT AND BARRETT POWER PLANTS

Lawsuit filed Against DEC to Stop Northport Power Plant Fish Kills

Northport, NY – Citizens Campaign for the Environment and Long Island Soundkeeper call on the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to enforce the Clean Water Act and stop allowing the Barrett and Northport power plants to run on expired permits and use outdated technology, which kills billions of fish eggs, larvae, and juvenile fish each year. Long Island Soundkeeper has filed a lawsuit against the DEC compelling the agency to update Northport Power Plant’s permit and require upgrades to the plant’s cooling system. CCE has sent a letter to the DEC urging them to enforce the federal Clean Water Act and mandate upgrades to both the Northport power plant and Barrett.

These power plants use antiquated technology and outdated permits for their cooling water intake structures, using a “once-through” cooling system that kills billions of fish and causes thermal pollution in the Long Island Sound and Western Bays. In 2001, the DEC required Barrett to upgrade technology to “closed cycle cooling,” yet nearly 5 years later, nothing has changed. The two groups will hold a press conference outside the Northport power plant calling on the DEC to stop stalling and finally mandate that Long Island power plants use 21st century technology.
