LONG ISLAND SENDS MUSICAL MESSAGE TO GOVERNOR CUOMO:

"All We Want for Christmas is an Outfall Pipe"

Farmingdale, NY— In a creative and unique move, community members and environmentalists are sending a musical video message to Governor Cuomo, asking for a very special Christmas gift this holiday season; an ocean outfall pipe with denitrification for the Bay Park sewage treatment plant. The video message is crafted to remind the Governor that public support for an ocean outfall pipe is extremely high and the community is united is this endeavor.

The plant currently discharges 50 million gallons per day of treated sewage into the Western Bays and contributes to low dissolved oxygen levels, harmful algal blooms, and depleted fisheries. For a decade, environmentalists, civic groups, and community members have called for upgrading the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant, including moving the outfall pipe to the ocean and installing technology that removes excessive nitrogen.

“The most requested gift from those living on the south shore this holiday is an ocean outfall pipe,” said Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director for Citizens Campaign for the Environment. “Community members want Governor Cuomo to know that clean water and healthy bays are still at the top of our wish list!”

There has been over $830 million allocated to the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant to harden, repair, and fix the plant from damage incurred from Superstorm Sandy. The last piece of the puzzle to make it a state-of-art sewage treatment plant is an ocean outfall with denitrification technology.

“We all want the same thing, for our kids and grandkids to be able to swim and fish in the Western Bays. An ocean outfall pipe with denitrification will help to restore our bays, protect our ocean, and revitalize our communities and economy,” added Rob Weltner, President of Operation Splash.
