NEW YORK STATE SENATE STANDS UP FOR CLEAN AIR, LAND, WATER, AND PEOPLE

Senators Vote to Approve Hydro-Fracking Moratorium

The New York State Senate voted 48-9 to approve a moratorium on the resource intensive hydraulic fracturing (hydro-fracking) to extract gas from shale.

"The New York Senate passed this sensible moratorium to ensure protection of people's health, clean water, and smart planning," said Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director for Citizens Campaign for the Environment. "New Yorkers know the cost of pollution too well. The Senate's vote affirms that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and we urge the Assembly and Governor to make the moratorium law."

Common Cause/NY found that the Gas Lobby spent over one million dollars to speed the rush to drill during the first half of 2010. Despite the heavy lobbying by the industry, the Senate affirmed the public's will. Strongly backed by New Yorkers, the moratorium provides for critical time for additional review on the consequences associated with risky hydro-fracking and the volumes of toxic caustic, and potentially radioactive liquid waste associated with this controversial extraction.

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers have sent letters, placed phone calls, and signed petitions urging state leaders to adopt a common sense moratorium on hydro-fracking and polls demonstrate a clear majority support a hydro-fracking moratorium. Citizens Campaign for the Environment applauds  the Senators that voted in favor of the hydro-fracking moratorium.   To become law, the moratorium must be passed by Assembly and signed by Governor Paterson.
