Local Towns, Villages, and Non-profits to meet with Federal and State leaders to join efforts in restoring Northport Harbor Water Quality

Farmingdale, NY—On Thursday, December 16, 2010, at 10am, The Northport Harbor Water Quality Protection Committee (NHWQPC), chaired by Supervisor Frank Petrone and CCE’s Executive Director, Adrienne Esposito, will meet with federal and state elected leaders to present 2011 priorities for restoration of the harbor. The Committee has developed a list of top priorities which will be discussed at the meeting. Federal and state leaders are needed to help with addressing on-going problems in the harbor such as toxic red tide, polluted stormwater run-off and upgrading old sewage infrastructure.

The NHWQPC began convening in spring of 2010 and has since crafted a detailed matrix of remediation projects, small and large, that will significantly aid in restoring the quality of harbor waters. Several of the committee recommendations are in the planning stages or underway. Implementation and financing of larger remediation efforts are needed and the committee is seeking the assistance of Federal and State elected leaders to advance these priorities. The top three needs identified by the committee are Scientific Research/Studies, Infrastructure, and Dredging of the Harbors.
