CCE CONGRATULATES SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE FOR BEING THE FIRST MUNICIPALITY IN NY TO BAN UBIQUITOUS PLASTIC BAGS

CCE applauds Mayor Mark Epley and the Southampton Village Trustees for championing the first resolution in New York State that bans the distribution of harmful plastic bags in stores. In place of plastic, the resolution mandates the use of reusable bags and paper bags produced of recycled materials.

“We can no longer view plastic bags as an item of cheap convenience; they are an enemy to thousands of marine and avian species and this ban has provided confidence that we will no longer find hundreds of plastic bags along beaches during beach clean ups. CCE and our members applaud the Village for taking action against this serious environmental threat and look forward to advancing similar legislation in other municipalities across NY and CT,” said Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment.

Plastic bags pollute our beaches, parks, and roadways, clog our streams and waterways, and kill wildlife. The Village of Southampton joins the Town of Westport, CT in banning plastic bags but it is the first municipality in New York State to take this important step.

“The Village of Southampton has propelled themselves to the forefront of this critical movement, which is sweeping across the nation and the globe. Across the world, consumer habits have changed dramatically after single-use bag legislation was introduced. It is the responsibility of beachfront communities such as this one to prevent plastic pollution from entering our beaches, estuaries, and oceans,” concluded Tara Bono, CCE’s Long Island Program Coordinator.
