STATEMENT ON NYS DEC PRESS RELEASE JUNE 30, 2011 REGARDING NEW RECOMMENDATIONS ISSUED IN HYDRAULIC FRACTURING REVIEW

Albany, NY--The DEC’s press release demonstrates that Governor Cuomo recognizes the inherent risks to air, land, water, and people from hydro-fracking. The press release outlined sensible protections for state lands, wildlife habitat, aquifers, and unfiltered drinking water supplies. CCE remains concerned that many communities are left vulnerable to site-specific and cumulative impacts from hydro-fracking.

CCE strongly agrees with Governor Cuomo when he stated that “all existing watersheds are sacrosanct,” and must be protected. CCE remains vigilant to ensure everyone's water is protected and will closely examine the revised draft upon release. The new draft is anticipated to be significantly altered and longer, therefore the public should be allowed a minimum of 180 days to study and provide comment. Additionally, the DEC should hold multiple public hearings throughout the state.
